SUMMARY:UU Spiritual Direction Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:How the Stars Get in Your Bones \nby Jan Richardson (2025) \nDecember invites tenderness\, blessing\, grief\, and light. Jan Richardson’s work holds all of these with extraordinary care. Through poetry\, image\, and reflection\, she companions readers through threshold seasons and reminds us how beauty and sorrow often travel together. \n~~~~~~~ \n\nThis year’s Spiritual Directors’ Book Circle is an invitation into the 3 C’s: conversation\, contemplation\, and companionship. Together we will read across poetry\, prophecy\, contemplation\, activism\, Indigenous wisdom\, creativity\, queer theology\, and spiritual resilience. Some books may feel like balm. Some may unsettle us. Some may give language to experiences we have carried wordlessly for years. \n\n\nAs spiritual directors\, we spend much of our lives listening deeply to the lives and questions of others. This circle is an opportunity to tend our own inner lives and vocational imagination. To notice what stirs. What resists. What nourishes. What calls us further toward courage\, compassion\, liberation\, and wonder. \n\n\nOur hope is that this year forms not only a reading group\, but a circle of practice and a network of practitioners. \n\n\nHosted by Meadville Lombard Theological School’s LIGHT.

SUMMARY:UU Spiritual Direction Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Writing Creativity and Soul \nby Sue Monk Kidd (2025) \nIn a season when many caregivers and spiritual leaders are carrying exhaustion\, this book offers creativity as soul care rather than performance. Sue Monk Kidd explores writing\, imagination\, memory\, and the inner life as spiritual practice. No one needs to be a “writer” to enter this conversation. This is a book about voice and tending the self beneath the roles we carry. \n\n~~~~~~~~ \n\n\nThis year’s Spiritual Directors’ Book Circle is an invitation into the 3 C’s: conversation\, contemplation\, and companionship. Together we will read across poetry\, prophecy\, contemplation\, activism\, Indigenous wisdom\, creativity\, queer theology\, and spiritual resilience. Some books may feel like balm. SUMMARY:UU Spiritual Direction Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Walking in Wonder \nby John O’Donohue (2018) \nAs autumn deepens\, we turn toward beauty\, imagination\, and the sacredness woven through ordinary life. O’Donohue’s reflections and blessings invite us into a spirituality of presence and wonder. This is a book to savor slowly and perhaps read aloud. \n~~~~~~~~ \nThis year’s Spiritual Directors’ Book Circle is an invitation into the 3 C’s: conversation\, contemplation\, and companionship. Together we will read across poetry\, prophecy\, contemplation\, activism\, Indigenous wisdom\, creativity\, queer theology\, and spiritual resilience. Some books may feel like balm. SUMMARY:September UU Spiritual Direction Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Give Me a Word: The Promise of an Ancient Practice to Guide Your Year \nby Christine Valters Paintner (2025) \nWe begin the year with the ancient practice of receiving a “word” for the year ahead. Paintner invites readers into contemplative listening\, discernment\, and spiritual attentiveness. This book offers a spacious beginning to our year together and encourages us to notice what wants to guide us in this season of life and ministry. \nZoom link: https://meadville-edu.zoom.us/my/tandirogers \nQuestions: trogers@meadville.edu

SUMMARY:A Taste of Spiritual Direction
DESCRIPTION:Image of candle burning with text “A Taste of Spiritual Direction”\nLed by Rev. Laura Horton-Ludwig (laurahortonludwig.com) \nHi there! I’m excited to invite you into a new\, free online workshop I’m leading next month \nA Taste of Spiritual Direction is happening on Monday\, August 17\, 7:30-8:30 p.m. Eastern/6:30-7:30 p.m. Central/5:30-6:30 p.m. Mountain/4:30-5:30 p.m. Pacific. \n \nI’ve created this workshop because I know so many sensitive\, spiritually-inclined people who would love to have a regular\, consistent space in their lives to explore their spirituality and figure out their lives\, without fear of being judged or pressured to fit into someone else’s definition of what it should look like.  \nFor many years\, spiritual direction has been that space for me personally. And as a spiritual director\, it’s a joy to hold that kind of space for others. \nSo in this workshop\, I’ll be sharing with participants:  \n\nWhat spiritual direction is\nHow a typical session works\nThe “why” of it–what it offers people\, during a session and as the work unfolds over time\n\nBut it’s not just going to be talking and discussing. You’ll also get to experience what it’s actually like\, through a real\, un-scripted\, unrehearsed mini-spiritual direction session with a volunteer right in the moment.   \nAnd you’ll have a chance to reflect on your own experience of witnessing the mini-session\, so you come away with greater insight into yourself too. \nIf this sounds good\, I’d love to see you there. \nAgain\, it’s free\, and it’s happening on Monday\, August 17. \nIt’s open to everyone\, so feel free to forward this invitation to a friend or two you think might be interested. \nAnd everyone who signs up will have access to the recording for 2 weeks after the workshop–though I do encourage you to make it in real time if you can. There’s often something quite magic about witnessing spiritual direction in the moment! \nTo register: https://laurahortonludwig.as.me/TasteOfSpiritualDirection \nHope to see you there\, \nLaura (laura@laurahortonludwig.com)
